todorov's narrative theory
Episode Genre and Semiotic Codes : Narrative
1) The narrative technique of flashback is used. Why is this manipulation of time useful in developing this non-linear narrative?
A flashback scene is a scene of something that happened earlier. A non-linear narrative is a disrupted narrative. A flashback is useful in developing a non-linear narrative because it lets the audience see through the eyes of the characters of what had actually happened before. This will then give a clearer idea of the whole story line.
2) A TV series links narrative over a series of episodes. Describe how the use of cliffhanger helps this episode to do this.
a cliffhanger is a dramatic ending of an episode that will leave the audience in suspense. The use of cliffhanger in this episode helps link narrative over a series of episodes because it only showed a bit of the next narrative. The continuation of the cliffhanger will then be showcased in the next episode. This would make the audience want to watch the next episode.
3) Define each of the words in bold.
- flashback - a showcase of something that has already happened.
- non-linear- a disrupted narrative.
- Cliffhanger - dramatic ending of an episode/movie that will leave the audience in suspense.
